Rebuilding of Kamaishi, Japan

The city of Kamaishi was almost completely destroyed in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. However, natural disasters such as this one have been overcome by the people of Kamaishi before. In 1896, the Meji Sanriku earthquake struck Japan on June 15th and measured a magnitude of 8.5. Minutes later, a tsunami struck Iwate coast with waves reaching as high as 24 meters in places. This was the highest ever recorded tsunami in Japan at this time.
Kamaishi was rebuilt and learned from this experience, used modern technology to develop the Kamaishi Tsunami Breakwater. This Tsunami Breakwater has been recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world`s deepest breakwater. Tsunami experts from around the world even considered Kamaishi to have the best harbor protection in the world. But despite it`s massive size, this breakwater was destroyed in the 2011 Tohoku tsunami. The majority of the city of Kamaishi was destroyed by this devastating tsunami.
When visiting Kamaishi, Japan, it is fascinating to view the progress of rebuilding this city. New and original methods to avoid tsunami damage are being used such as using the surrounding mountain terrain to elevate the land. Every person from every nation was effected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami is some way. Traveling to Japan, one can see the effects of the tsunami as well as the positive effects such as the rebuilding of the town and visit the many memorials.
